HEALTH TESTING PRACTICES
My papillons are kept up to date on vaccines and preventatives and are examined by a licensed veterinarian annually. Before entering my breeding program all of the dogs in my kennel are certified to have healthy Hearts, Patellas and Eyes through exam by a qualified veterinarian or veterinary specialist. They are also screened for breed relevant genetic conditions such as Factor VII, Von Willebrand Disease (VWD), Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (NAD) through Embark, Gensol or PawPrint Genetics. When choosing outside studs I try to choose dogs who have been health checked as much as possible.
Once my dogs have been tested and tests have been registered I ensure that all health testing results are publicly viewable and registered with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Links for each individual dog’s testing results are viewable on their page, just click on the icon of the company or the blue link to see each result. The Papillons in my program have also been issued CHIC (Canine Health Information Center) numbers through the OFA. CHIC numbers are only granted to dogs which have publicly registered results for all recommended health tests outlined by their breed parent club. For the Papillon these standards are outlined by the Papillon Club of America (PCA). These tests are important and help to confirm each dog is healthy enough to pass along their genetics. Click on any of the links below to learn about the health testing/registering agency.
PUPPY HEALTH
From the moment they enter the world each of our puppies is individually identified and their health and development is tracked and recorded (weight, development, milestones, etc…). They are dewormed every two weeks. Before going home all of our puppies are examined by our veterinarian at least twice and have started their first rounds of core vaccinations. They are also microchipped and enrolled in a pet insurance program before leaving my home.
UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES
Even with a great amount of due diligence on a breeders end, there are still health issues that can arise. You as their owner can mitigate these with good husbandry and regular veterinary visits. I advise every puppy owner to keep health insurance coverage in the event of accidents and illnesses. I enroll every puppy born in my home with pet insurance early and it is transferable to the new owner. The pet insurance I use is Pets Best but I encourage owners to research which insurances provide coverage in their area and which plans/policies match their needs and budget.
